Job Description

Standardized Patient, School of Medicine - Georgetown University Medical Center

Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.

Requirements

The School of Medicine is heir to the long and rich Catholic and Jesuit tradition of caring for the sick. From its inception, Georgetown has been committed to the pursuit of knowledge in service of the community. The Georgetown medical experience is centered in 'cura personalis' - care for the psychological, spiritual, social as well as physical well being of the person. It lays the groundwork for the intellectual and ethical formation of physician healers committed to the clinically competent care of and the well being of their patients and dedicated to the health needs of the underserved in our society.

The Standardized Patient (SP) at the Georgetown University School of Medicine simulates patient scenarios to provide professional educational experiences for medical students, for both learning and assessment around their physical exam techniques and patient communication/interpersonal skills. SPs are trained in advance of any student interaction. SPs are required to portray (from memory) a specific patient case (medical history, physicality, emotional state) with realism, consistency, and accurate recall after an interaction. SPs often provide verbal and/or written feedback to learners. SP work is intermittent 'as needed,' and work hours will vary, dependent upon course schedules and objectives. Most work will take place on weekdays. Additional duties include, but not limited to:

  • Portray a common complaint/condition for educational and/or assessment events.
  • Standardize the portrayal of emotional and physical aspects of patients or patient family members.
  • Allow learners to practice physical health assessment techniques, accurately evaluating learners and delivering written and/or verbal feedback.
  • Participate in ongoing training around clinical exam maneuvers/checklists, simulated case review, and evaluation of students.
  • Keep an interest in education, contributing to the development of healthcare professionals.
  • Possess a positive and proactive mindset, strong work ethic, and professional reliability, working collaboratively in a learning environment with respect for a diverse community.
  • Simulate all aspects of patient scenarios, including history of current problem, affect/behavior, and physical findings, in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner.
  • Wear provided clinical attire for work assignments, including a hospital gown with appropriate undergarments, while on camera and/or observed live through video monitor.
  • Accurately and consistently complete checklists at a 95% accuracy percentage.
  • Follow all Georgetown University and School of Medicine policies and procedures, including confidentiality and privacy.

Work Interactions

Standardized Patients work closely with the Integrated Learning Center staff in the School of Medicine, course faculty, Event Managers during clinical skills teaching sessions, and students in the M.D. program.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Computer proficiency
  • Ability to provide verbal feedback to learners using constructive feedback training
  • Comfort with having repeated physical examination maneuvers performed on body by learners, and sometimes clinical faculty
  • Willingness to be audio- and video-taped during simulations (on-campus and virtually, via Zoom), and demonstrate technical competency
  • Demonstrate flexibility and reliability with work scheduling and assignments
  • Prior experience as a standardized patient, health professional, instructor, or actor preferred
