Job Description Overview:

Understanding that every Catholic is called to evangelize, the Director of Adult Faith Formation and Discipleship is responsible for overseeing, developing, and implementing initiatives that promote ongoing evangelization and discipleship for adults in the parish. This role aims to foster a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith, a personal intimacy with our Lord Jesus Christ, and active engagement in the life of the Church. The director will collaborate with the pastor and other parish staff to create opportunities for adult education, spiritual formation, and community-building that align with the mission of evangelization and missionary discipleship.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Evangelization and Discipleship:

  • Promote a culture of missionary discipleship, encouraging parishioners to live out their baptismal call through active participation in parish life, service, and missionary outreach.
  • Give direction, guidance and oversite to two FOCUS missionaries in their parish outreach and small group bible study initiatives.
  • Lead FOCUS small groups or discipleship initiative that help individuals encounter Christ, grow in their faith, and share the Gospel with others.

2. Spiritual Formation:

  • Create opportunities for parishioners to deepen their prayer life, including retreats, days of reflection, adoration, and spiritual direction.
  • Encourage and support the development of adult spirituality by offering resources, spiritual mentoring, and opportunities for personal growth.
  • Provide support for individuals seeking vocational discernment, whether in lay ministry, religious life, or other callings.

3. Adult Faith Formation Programs:

  • Develop, plan, and implement comprehensive adult faith formation programs, including Bible studies, OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults), sacramental preparation for adults, retreats, speaker series and parish missions.
  • Offer classes and workshops on Catholic theology, scripture, Church history, moral teachings, and spirituality that appeal to a diverse range of adult parishioners.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteer catechists and facilitators for various faith formation programs.
  • Act as liaison between ministry and service organization leadership of the parish and offer administrative support, promotion, and communication.

In addition to help form ministry leaders to understand their ministry in the parish and the parish mission of helping everyone come into an intimate relationship with Christ. 

4. Sacramental Preparation:

  • Coordinate and lead sacramental preparation programs for adults, including Confirmation, and OCIA, helping to initiate and refer for annulment and marriage preparation needs. 
  • Provide pastoral support and guidance to adults seeking to deepen their sacramental life, including those returning to the Church or new to the faith.
  • Collaborate with the pastor to develop and implement a vision for adult sacramental ministry that fosters long-term engagement.

5. Communication and Outreach:

  • Utilize parish communication tools (bulletins, flocknote, social media, website, etc.) to promote adult faith formation opportunities and engage parishioners.
  • Foster an environment of hospitality and welcome, ensuring that adult formation events are accessible, inclusive, and spiritually enriching for all.
  • Build relationships with parishioners to understand their needs and respond with relevant and timely formation opportunities.

6. Collaboration and Leadership:

  • Serve as a member of the parish Executive Leadership Team (ELT), collaborating with the pastor, staff, and other ministry leaders to support the overall mission of the parish.
  • Supervise the faith formation team comprising of child faith (Catechesis of the Good Shepherd) and Youth Ministry for cohesiveness and support.
  • Provide regular reports to the pastor and pastoral & finance councils on the status and effectiveness of adult faith formation programs.
  • Stay informed about current trends and best practices in adult catechesis and evangelization, incorporating new ideas and approaches where appropriate.

7. Administrative Duties:

  • Manage the budget and resources for adult faith formation and discipleship opportunities.
  • Maintain records of attendance, program participation, and sacramental preparation.
  • Coordinate logistics for events, including scheduling, space reservations, and materials.
  • Develop a system to incorporate the tracking of a parishioner’s journey of through discipleship using Sherry Weddell’s five key stages or “Thresholds” that individuals pass through on their journey toward becoming intentional disciples of Jesus. These five thresholds of discipleship are: 1. Initial Trust, 2. Spiritual Curiosity, 3. Spiritual Openness, 4. Spiritual Seeking, 5. Intentional Discipleship.

Qualifications:

  • Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in theology, Religious Education, Pastoral Ministry, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in adult faith formation, evangelization, or a related ministry role.
  • Strong knowledge of Catholic theology, catechesis, and discipleship.
  • Excellent communication, teaching, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to recruit, form, and support volunteers in ministry roles.
  • Proficient in the use of technology and social media for ministry outreach.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including working 2 to 3 evenings per week, and Sundays, as required by parish events and initiatives.

  • Flexibility: Ability to adapt to the needs of a diverse parish community.
